From the President of the Board

My name is Gayle Scott. I am a US Navy veteran, an artist, person with a chornic illness, a wife and a mother with an adult special needs child. Polka Carp Studio is all about making connections with people through art. I am passionate about making the world a better place for marginalized people. It is a fundamental need for all humans to feel safe, accepted and part of a community. Being part of a community is having meaning in our daily lives, knowing we have a purpose and can better our way of living. These can be a challenge for veterans and those with disabilities.

I have personally experienced how collaboration creates community. Shared goals and a willingness to learn new things as part of the collaborative process builds relationships. For me, art (in its many forms) is at the center of building an inclusive, vibrant community. Together we can create something far bigger and deeper than we ever thought possible. I am excited to be part of this endeavor

My Story

I have been creating art and crafts all my life. Learning self-sufficiency from my parents as we lived in a rural area was an essential part of growing up. Small engine mechanics, car repair, carpentry, cooking, music, keeping livestock, sewing and the many ways to combine those skills into daily adventure kept me busy. In the treasured trips to the library I devoured the arts and craft books, gleaning ever more ideas for adventure and creativity. I created my own art for myself, crafted toys and furniture. I invented things for my own use.  After high school I attended the local university for two years before I followed in my father's and mother's footsteps and enlisted in the US Navy. It was the 4 years that changed my life forever and allowed me opportunities after my enlistment to pursue more education. I had my struggle with depression for many years both during and after my enlistment. With help, and lots of art therapy, I went back to that local university as a veteran, a single mother of two and finished my Bachelor of Arts in  Biology. I have had many jobs in the intervening years but each one was about helping people, and in each job I incorporated creativity as much as possible.

I continue to use art in many forms to keep in touch with myself and explore my boundaries.

As a mid-life artist I can say I am still learning, still making connections and still trying new things. The library has been replaced by the internet but nothing replaces being with people and creating something new together.  I look forward to the next collaboration. Let's go!
